Caryl “Moose” Becker

Caryl L. “Moose” Becker, 72, of Beacon Street, Keyser, died Monday (July 14, 2014) at her daughter’s residence in Bridgeport while under the care of Amedisys Hospice.

Born on June 15, 1942, in Gary, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Patrick) Sofiak. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene H. “Gene” Becker, on April 24, 1988; a brother-in-law, Richard Mies; and a nephew, Jeffrey Mies.

Mrs. Becker was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana, and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Michigan University. Caryl then went on to pursue her master’s degree, but the death of her husband in 1988 prevented her from completing her studies, so she further specialized in behavior learning disabilities in the fields of what she would have had obtained had she completed her credits.

On June 1 of this year, Mrs. Becker retired with more than 26 years of service as a kindergarten teacher for the Mineral County Board of Education. She was a member of the West Virginia Teachers Association, the National Education Association and several other related professional associations. She also was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 191, Keyser, and the Church of the Assumption, Keyser. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crocheting and playing computer games, and was an avid bowler. She loved her special companions, her Yorkie, “Mali,” and her golden retriever, “Puffers.”

Surviving are her daughters, Alison Culhane and husband Ryan of Bridgeport, and Ashley Becker of Mineola, New York; one brother, Dennis Sofiak and wife Sharon of Campbellsville, Kentucky; one sister, Sharon Mies of Pinellas Park, Florida; a nephew, Joel Mies and wife Lucy of Tampa, Florida; a niece, Tracey Bean and husband Jason of Indianapolis, Indiana; two grandnephews, Nolan Mies and Joshua Bean; and her granddogs, “Kiko” and “Nilla.”

Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 1-4 p.m. Sunday. There will be no visitation hours Sunday evening. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Assumption with Father William K. Matheny Jr. as celebrant. Interment will be in Bayard Cemetery, Bayard.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the Amedisys Hospice, 67 Casino Drive, Suite 102, Anmoore, WV 26323; the Mineral County Humane Society, HC 84 Box 12, Keyser, WV 26726; or the Mineral County Library, c/o Connie Sutton, 105 N. Main St., Keyser, WV 26726.

Condolences and personal reflections to the family may be left after Mrs. Becker’s obituary at http://www.smithfuneralhomes.net/.
