Larry H. Nolan, after a lengthy illness, died peacefully Wednesday (May 1, 2013) in Towson, Md.
Larry was the son of Clara M. Mitchell of Grant Town and stepson of the late Alexander P. Mitchell. Larry was an exceptional man who loved everything about life. He loved to travel, read and was an excellent photographer.
Larry graduated from Dunbar High School in 1961. To further his education, he enrolled in West Virginia State College in Dunbar and graduated in May 1966 with a BS in zoology and a minor in botany. Out of a deep desire to serve his country, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in November 1966. He was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He received an honorable discharge in 1970 and served in the National Reserve until September 1972.
Serving as a medical specialist in the military led Larry to pursue a career in the field of medicine. Following this leading, he enrolled and graduated in 1978 from Mercy Medical College in Detroit, Mich., receiving a BS degree as a physician medical assistant. He also was certified as a phlebotomist and X-ray technician. He worked for several hospitals in the Detroit area as a physician assistant until he suffered a massive stroke in 1994.
Due to his health, Larry relocated to West Chester, Pa., to be closer to his family and eventually became a long-term resident at Golden Living Nursing Facility in Morgantown. In September 2012, to be closer to his family in Pennsylvania, he was moved to a nursing facility in Towson, Md.
In addition to his mother, Larry is survived by his brother, Alex Mitchell of Fairmont; sisters, Phyllis Stewart (Marvin) of West Chester, Pa., and Tina Mitchell King of Prussia, Pa.; several nieces; a nephew; and a host of cousins and friends.
Home going service for Larry will be held Wednesday at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 1 Hagerty Blvd., West Chester, Pa., at noon. Interment and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the West Virginia National Cemetery, 42 Veterans Memorial Lane, Grafton.
