Roberta Olive (Dunham) Sayres Smith, age 103, of Grafton, passed away on Friday (Oct. 4, 2013) at the Grafton City Hospital in Grafton.
She was born Sept. 24, 1910, in the Hepzibah Community in Taylor County, a daughter of the late Noah Carter and Olive Virginia (Elder) Dunham.
She is survived by her three children, daughter Carol Jean (Sayres) Sapp of Grafton, son Paul Grayson Sayres and wife Imogene of Cross Lanes, and stepson Robert Lee Smith and wife Claire of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; along with step-great-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry G. Sayres; second husband, E. Lee Smith; two daughters, Catherine Virginia Sayres and Janice Lou Sayres Clayton; five brothers, Burl, Alva, George, Carl and twin brother Alberta; three sisters, Lola Dunham, Margaret Dunham Knight and Mary Genevieve Dunham Moyers; one son-in-law, Robert E. “Sappo” Sapp; and one grandchild.
Roberta was a homemaker, and then became a waitress for several years. She was also a member of the First Christian Church.
The viewing will be Monday from 2-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton. The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Eddie Martin and Pastor Billy Crane officiating. Interment will follow at the Hepzibah Cemetery in Taylor County.
