John Slaughter

John Alan Slaughter, 57, of Benton’s Ferry, passed away Wednesday (April 24, 2013) at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born Nov. 26, 1955, a son of the late Junior and Ruby “Rife” Slaughter.

He is survived by his wife of 25 wonderful years, Sharlene Smock Slaughter.

Mr. Slaughter was a 1974 graduate of East Fairmont High School and also attended Fairmont State College. He was a Protestant by faith. He worked as the payroll administrator at Novelis, formerly Alcan Aluminum, for more than 36 years.

John was an active member in the United Steel Workers Local Union No. 1 where he served as financial secretary. He coached his sons for many years through Little League and basketball. He was a huge fan of the West Virginia University football and basketball teams; he never missed a game. John enjoyed traveling, watching his grandson wrestle, and date night at the movies.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jeremy Alan Slaughter and his partner Stephen White of Portland, Ore., Aaron Potoczny and his wife Nicole of Fairmont, and Justin Potoczny and Jen Wells of Barrackville; three sisters, Martha Furbee of Benton’s Ferry, Carolyn Ledsome of Montana Mines, and Beverly Thomas and her fiancé Billy Harsanyi of Mount Harmony; two grandchildren, Austin and Anna Potoczny; two nephews, Brian Ledsome and his wife Stephanie of Benton’s Ferry, and Gary Furbee and his wife Denise of Morgantown; one niece, Jessica Thomas and her fiancé Michael Ryan of Fairmont; as well as several great-nieces and -nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion County Humane Society, P.O. Box 905, Fairmont, WV 26555.

The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday with Keith Bramel officiating. The family encourages everyone to wear Mountaineer clothing to both days of John’s services.
