James Hardesty Jr.

James D. Hardesty Jr., 58, of Summerville, S.C., formerly of Rivesville, passed away Thursday (April 25, 2013) in his residence.   

He was born Sept. 16, 1954, in Hartford, Conn., the only child of Joyce Hess Hardesty of Summerville, S.C., and the late James Donald Hardesty.   

Jimmy attended the fellowship of Oakwood Church in Summerville, S.C. He attended Rivesville Elementary School where his good friend Tony “Oatsey” Napollio nicknamed his “Tank,” which stuck with him his entire life.   

As a youth he played little fringe baseball and Pop Warner football. He graduated from Rivesville High School in 1972, where he played varsity basketball and football. He later attended Fairmont State College and then went to work in the mines for Eastern Gas and Fuel in Grant Town.  

Additional survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Brian Connolly, and his granddaughter, Ava, of Daniel Island, S.C.; several aunts and uncles, Nancy and Mimi Angeline of Fairmont, Joann and Glenn Scott of Rivesville, and Jody and Janice Hardesty of Rivesville; several cousins, including Dave Woody and his family of Ocala, Fla.; and his former wife, Darlene Haught, and her sister, Lou Ann Wolfe, both of Lexington, S.C. He also has a Maltese dog, his best buddy, Bentley.   

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Margaret “Oliver” Hess and Joe and Kathleen “Thorne” Hardesty, Aunt Helen Swisher, Uncle Albert and Aunt Sylvia Hardesty.   

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 5-8 p.m. today and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Stanley Merrifield officiating. Burial will follow in McCurdysville Cemetery in McCurdysville.   

The family requests that all memorial donations be made to Agape Hospice, 9301 Medical Plaza Drive North, Charleston, SC 29406.
