Leland Keener

Leland Wade Keener, 89, of Fairmont, passed away Tuesday (April 30, 2013) at the Arbors at Fairmont Nursing Facility.

He was born April 26, 1924, in Davis Town, Pa., a son of the late Galey Leland and Lona Jane Wade Keener.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Louise Amos Keener, of Fairmont.

Mr. Keener was a member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Worthington. He was a 1942 graduate of Sistersville High School. Leland was a member of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was retired from the Westinghouse Corp. in Fairmont, where he served as a machinist in the Sealed Beam Plant for more than 34 years. Leland was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge No. 294, of Fairmont, and the American Legion. He was an avid West Virginia University sports fan, as well as a Pittsburgh Steeler fan.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Madaleine Firestone.

Friends and family may call Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 6-8 p.m. today. The funeral will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Tim Shuttlesworth officiating. Entombment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum in Fairmont. Military rites will be held at the cemetery committal service.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
