FAIRMONT — Richard Garrett, 82, of Worthington, passed away Saturday (May 11, 2013) at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport.

He was born in Marion County on Sept. 17, 1930, a son of the late Herbert and Edna (Rizer) Garrett.

He graduated from Monongah High School and Fairmont State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Richard then went on to graduate school at the University of Maryland, where he earned his master’s and Ph.D. degrees. Richard was a Roman Catholic by faith and a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Roman Catholic Church.

Richard proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War for four years.

He was a school teacher in Maryland for 10 years. He also served as the supervisor of transportation for Maryland Schools. He also owned and operated his own concrete business for eight years.

Richard was the owner and operator of the Handi Mart Inc. in Worthington for 37 years. He enjoyed antique cars, collection coins and music. He loved working and most enjoyed his customers.

He is survived by his loving wife and business partner of more than 51 years, Rosalie (Nagy) Garrett of Worthington.

Also surviving are two brothers, Bobby Garrett and his wife Betty of Canton, Ohio, and Jimmy Garrett and his wife Betty of Four States; two sisters, Shirley Williams of Williamsport, Ohio, and Kathleen Fedio of Worthington; several nieces and nephews, including Jimmy and Erica Garrett, Chris and Ellen Garrett, Jeff and Sherry Quinn, Vanessa and Georgia, Donnie Quinn Jr., Brenda Quinn, Jenna Morgan and Mark Karnafell; great-nieces and -nephews, Haley, Michael and Catlin Garrett and Frankie Marie Garbor; and his sister-in-law, Margaret Karnafell of Cleveland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Randy Lee Garrett in 1999; a brother, Charles Garrett; a sister, Virginia Quinn; two nieces, Nicole Markley and Rhonda Quinn; and a nephew, Donnie Quinn.

Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today. A vigil service will be held at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. today. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter the Fisherman Roman Catholic Church in Fairmont with Father Robert A. Perriello as celebrant. Interment services will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
