Opal Kerns

Opal Marie Bush Kerns, 87 years of age of Middleville Road, Taylor County, passed away on Saturday (Sept. 14, 2013) at the Rosewood Center, Grafton.

She was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Alba and Leota Kelly Bush.

She is survived by a daughter, Melinda Kerns Gobel and her husband Paul of Flemington; two granddaughters, Amy Gobel Jackson and her husband Jeremy of Grafton, and Amber Gobel of Bridgeport; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Liegh and Tori Marie Jackson of Grafton; a brother-in-law, Ralph Nixon; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Vane Kelley Bush, and three sisters, Helen Bush Fox Nay, Gladys Bush Fox Wilmouth and Betty Rae Bush Nixon.

Opal was a 1945 graduate of Grafton High School, and then graduated from the West Virginia Business College. She began her working career as a legal secretary for attorney Melvin Clemens. In 1961, she established Kern’s Lake Side Store in Bridgeport. Several years later she began working in the banking business and retired in 1990 from Middletown National Bank, then CB&T and later known as Huntington Bank. During this time, she owned and operated Granny’s Ceramics for many years. She shared her ceramic talents as a volunteer at Rosewood Center in Grafton.

She was a member of Middleville Baptist Church and the Middleville Homemakers Club/CEOS. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Friends will be received at the Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main St., Bridgeport, on Monday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Robert Perine presiding. She will be laid to rest beside her parents at Hepizbah Cemetery, Taylor County.
