— George Paul Simon, 87, a resident of the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility, Clarksburg, and formerly of Shinnston and Pine Grove, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 27, 2013) at the facility.

He was born in Shinnston on Sept. 27, 1926, a son of the late Louis and Martha Thomas Simon.

He was also preceded in death by his precious stepmother who raised him from the age of 2, Rosheda Thomas Simon; one daughter, Carol Darling and her husband Jim; one son, Steve Simon; two sisters, Mary Tomey and Rose McLaughlin; two brothers, Sam and John Paul “Poppy” Simon; and one granddaughter, Staci Jo Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Norma J. Shingleton Simon of Bridgeport, whom he married Nov. 14, 1953; two grandsons, Sean Yoho and his wife Lisa of New Martinsville and their children Mckinlee, Faith and Isabella, and Andy Yoho and his wife Sarah and their children Sebestian and Jericho of Stonewood; two sisters, Helen Spano of Warren, Ohio, and Genevieve Griffin of Shinnston; one brother, Dave Simon and his wife Diana of Shinnston; and several nieces and nephews.

George was a grocer and owner of the former Simon’s Grocery, Shinnston, and was the owner and retired from Simon’s Market in Pine Grove. He was a member of Saint Johns Lodge No. 24 A.F. & A.M. Shinnston where he served as Past Master and was a member of the Queen Esther Chapter No. 11, O.E.S Clarksburg where he served as a Past Grand Patron. He served the City of Shinnston as its mayor from 1965 to 1969. He was a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church of Bridgeport and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Friends may call at Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St., Shinnston, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Dr. Michael Hopkins and Pastor Leary Van Horn officiating. Interment will follow in Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
