Gary Wayne Slaughter, 61, of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (Oct. 27, 2013) at his home surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness.
He was born in Fairmont on July 9, 1952, a son of the late Samuel H. Slaughter Sr. and Reva E. (Hawkins) Slaughter.
Gary proudly served his country with the U.S. Army as well as the National Guard. He was a coal miner by trade for 18 years, working in the Jordan No. 93 mine, Robinson Run mine and lastly at the Martinka mine. He was a 1971 graduate of East Fairmont High School. He was a retired member of the UMWA and he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Melissa F. “Missy” Slaughter of Fairmont; and two grandchildren, Adriana Nicole Slaughter and Ezra Bradley Slaughter.
Also surviving is a brother, Samuel H. Slaughter Jr. of Fairmont; a sister, Carolyn S. Slaughter of Fairmont; his ex-wife and mother of his daughter, Linda S. Slaughter of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Wayne Slaughter.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 4-8 p.m. today and from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Dallas Stuzen officiating where flag-folding honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard. Interment will follow at Glady Creek Cemetery in Marion County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to offset funeral costs and sent to Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, WV 26554.
