Junior “Pap” Cunningham

Junior Paul “Pap” Cunningham Jr., 84, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (Sept. 10, 2013), at Fitzwater’s Assisted Living in Fairmont.

He was born in Alger, Ohio, on Dec. 6, 1928, a son of the late Orval P. Cunningham Sr. and Donna Mae (Hackworth) Cunningham.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Charlene (Efaw) Cunningham.

Pap proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. He was retired from Consol, where he worked as an office administrator. He was a very active part of Fitzwater’s Assisted Living where he was in charge of maintenance and maintaining the beautiful facility over the past 20 years.

He was a graduate of University High School. He was a man that worked hard his entire life. He enjoyed volunteering countless hours helping others, gardening, doing yard work, tending to this farm in Curtisville and most especially spending time with his great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his two grandchildren, Heather Fitzwater and her husband Tim of Fairmont, and Missi Howerton and her husband Dr. Scott Howerton of North Carolina; and four great-grandchildren, Chandler Fitzwater of Fairmont, Sterling Fitzwater of Fairmont, Anna Howerton of North Carolina and Scotty Howerton of North Carolina.

Also surviving is his sister, Nellie Fluharty and her husband Darold of Mannington, and a daughter-in-law, Anita Cunningham Rivenbark of North Carolina.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rick Cunningham.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1 to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with Evangelist Brent Gallagher officiating. Interment will follow at Mannington Memorial Park in Mannington.

The family would like to thank the employees and staff of Fitzwater’s Assisted Living, all the nurses and staff of Fairmont General Hospital Emergency Room and ICU, and the employees of Amedisys Hospice and his neighbors Manzel and Cathy for all of their help, care and compassion for Pat.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
