Herbert Plum

Herbert W. Plum, 90, of Morgantown, and formerly of Preston County, died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2013) at his home.

He was born March 4, 1922, in Howeseville, to the late Ben B. and Bessie L. Shrout Plum.

Herbert was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in London, England, and later served 12 years in the Army Reserves and National Guard. He worked as a coal miner for 30 years at the Purseglove 15 mine and was referred to by many as the “Mayor of Big Bear,” being one of the most senior and longest running property owners at Big Bear Lake Camplands. He loved pitching horseshoes competitively, hunting and helping people.

He is survived by his son, Dana W. Plum and his wife Linda of Morgantown; a daughter, Pamela L. Cox and her husband Frank of Hendersonville, N.C.; one sister, Evelyn Lewis of Terra Alta; and one granddaughter, Sherea Geddings of Asheville, N.C., and her three children, Holly Geddings, Brianna Geddings and Austin Lively. He is also survived by five step-grandchildren, Frank Cox III and wife of Harrisonburg, Va., Vicki Burke of Morgantown, Rebecca McLain of Eggland AFB, Fla., Bruce Stone and wife of Florida, and Starlet Hess and husband of Kingwood.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Dallas L. Plum; his two brothers, Calvin and Glen Plum; and six sisters, Bertha Plum, Rosie Matheny, Alice Trader, Louise Park, Mary Jane McCabe and Helen Sine.

Family and friends may call at Browning Funeral Home at 201 E. Main St. in Kingwood from 4-6 p.m. Friday, where funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday for the funeral service, with Elder Frank Cox officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Camp Ground Cemetery.

Herbert was a Seventh-day Adventist by faith since 2003.

In the lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Christian Help located at 219 Walnut St. in Morgantown.
