Player of the Week, April 14: Johnny Kesling

FAIRMONT — When Fairmont Senior’s Johnny Kesling stepped into the batter’s box this past week, it was game over.

In helping Fairmont Senior to a 5-1 week from Saturday to Friday, Kesling drove in several runs and even had a multi-home run game.

To start the week out, the senior slugger had two hits and an RBI as the Polar Bears picked up two wins against Spring Mills and Pendleton County, respectively. He followed that up by going 2-for-4 with an RBI against Philip Barbour just three days later. The next night, in the Polar Bears’ first loss of the season, Kesling had a single and a double with an RBI.

In the Polar Bears’ third game in as many days, the big game happened.

Kesling led Fairmont Senior in an 18-6 wallop of Lincoln with two home runs, giving him his fourth extra-base hit of the week.

Though it didn’t count toward the week’s stats for the player of the week, Kesling followed up a strong week by stringing together seven hits, including two more home runs, while driving in 10 runs in two wins for Fairmont Senior on the road.

For his strong performance, Kesling was voted this week’s I-79 Joe Romeo’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week and will receive a coupon for a free appetizer from Applebee’s of Fairmont.

  • Ford dominant at Clay-Battelle meet

In one meet in particular at Clay-Battelle High School, Ford showed just how dominant he could be, picking up three first-place finishes to go along with one second-place finish.
