Player of the Week, May 26: Austin Norman

FAIRMONT — When coaches need someone to step up, they tend to look no farther than their senior leaders.

When the task was laid out in front of Fairmont Senior this past week — beat East Fairmont and capture a sectional crown — senior slugger Austin Norman answered the call.

Norman went a perfect 3-for-3 in his last sectional game as a Polar Bear, knocking two balls over the fence and powering Fairmont Senior to a 5-2 victory, his three RBIs being the difference in the score.

Norman has been doing it all season on both sides of the field.

In addition to his team-leading 10 home runs, Norman has found success on the mound, too. The sectional final game was no different as Norman pitched the final two innings to close things out.

For his strong showing so far in the postseason, Norman was voted this week’s I-79 Joe Romeo’s Times West Virginian player of the week and will receive a coupon for a free appetizer from Applebee’s of Fairmont.

  • Ford dominant at Clay-Battelle meet

In his first season on the track for the East Fairmont Bees, Barron Ford had to get acclimated a little bit. But once he settled in, he was a force to be reckoned with.
In one meet in particular at Clay-Battelle High School, Ford showed just how dominant he could be, picking up three first-place finishes to go along with one second-place finish.

Every team needs a power hitter.
For every player who can slap down a perfect leadoff bunt, there’s a home run-hitting power bat in the heart of the batting order.
For North Marion, that was catcher Keegun McCullough.

Stewart came into the weekend as the top-ranked wrestler at the 152-pound weight class. By the end of the weekend, he would finish the same way.
