Player of the Week, April 21: Chelsi Latocha

FAIRMONT — It’s common knowledge that you don’t talk about a no-hitter while it’s in progress or you might jynx the pitcher.

Superstitions aside, it would’ve taken a lot more than the mentioning of the words “no” and “hitter” together to stop North Marion’s Chelsi Latocha from dominating on the mound this past week.

The senior right-hander tossed not one, but two no-hitters in the same week. If that’s not surprising enough, she did it in back-to-back, albeit shortened, games.

She started her streak on Thursday night, tossing 4.0 innings of no-hit baseball while striking out seven batters in an 11-0 win over Philip Barbour. She came right back the next morning and hurled 4.0 no-hit innings against rival Fairmont Senior, striking out three in a 20-0 blowout.

The two victories added to a strong week and gave the pitcher 7.0 straight innings, equivalent to one full game of work, in which she struck out 10 batters and allowed no runs.

The no-hit bids came sandwiched between a 5.0-inning outing Monday night in which she gave up just four hits and two runs in a 12-2 win over Buckhannon Upshur and a 3.0-inning contest Friday night where she gave up six hits and two runs in an 18-2 victory over Clay-Battelle.

In the four wins North Marion picked up this week, Latocha threw 15.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and just four runs.

For her strong performance, Latocha was voted this week’s I-79 Joe Romeo’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week and will receive a coupon for a free appetizer from Applebee’s of Fairmont.

  • Ford dominant at Clay-Battelle meet

In his first season on the track for the East Fairmont Bees, Barron Ford had to get acclimated a little bit. But once he settled in, he was a force to be reckoned with.
In one meet in particular at Clay-Battelle High School, Ford showed just how dominant he could be, picking up three first-place finishes to go along with one second-place finish.

  • McCullough’s power a hit for North Marion

Every team needs a power hitter.
For every player who can slap down a perfect leadoff bunt, there’s a home run-hitting power bat in the heart of the batting order.
For North Marion, that was catcher Keegun McCullough.

  • Hayden Stewart-Dakota Miller - 152-ts.jpg Stewart’s Big 10 championship run a memorable one

Stewart came into the weekend as the top-ranked wrestler at the 152-pound weight class. By the end of the weekend, he would finish the same way.
