Player of the Week, May 12: Marlee Angelucci

FAIRMONT — They say records are made to be broken.

North Marion’s Marlee Angelucci took that old saying quite literally this past week, setting a school record and being part of a relay team that snapped a near-decade-old Big 10 record on the track.

No stranger to success this season on the track, Angelucci kicked off her week by setting a North Marion record in the 100-meter dash last Saturday at the Gazette Relays in Charleston. She finished with a time of 12.81 in the finals, good enough for third overall and cementing her name in the Huskies’ record books.

For the meet, she also added a fourth-place finish in the 200 along with a win in the 4X100 relay and a second-place finish in the 4X200 relay, helping her team to a second-place finish overall.

You’d think setting one record would be all one could handle in a single week. But not for Angelucci, who helped the 4X100 team of McKenzi Fisher, Mariah Dent, Alexis Hillberry and herself set a Big 10 record by finishing with a time of 51.94 at the Big 10 Championships Saturday. The previous record was set back in 1986, but it now belongs to the Lady Huskies foursome.

Angelucci also added a second-place finish in the 4x200 and a third-place finish in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, helping the Huskies to finish second in the Big 10.

For her record-setting performance, Angelucci was voted this week’s I-79 Joe Romeo’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week and will receive a coupon for a free appetizer from Applebee’s of Fairmont.

  • McCullough’s power a hit for North Marion

Every team needs a power hitter.
For every player who can slap down a perfect leadoff bunt, there’s a home run-hitting power bat in the heart of the batting order.
For North Marion, that was catcher Keegun McCullough.
