Goliath might have won the battle, but David didn’t give an inch.
That was the story in the Class AA boys’ basketball state quarterfinals on Thursday night, as No. 8 North Marion slugged it out against top-ranked Bluefield, took one on the chin, and got back up and kept fighting in its first tournament appearance in nine years.
In the end, though, Bluefield was just too much in a 62-51 loss at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum. The Beavers, last year’s state runner-up and now 23-3, meet No. 4 Robert C. Byrd in tonight’s 7:15 semifinal. But for that championship dream to become a reality come Saturday, Bluefield will likely have to fare better than it did against a North team that entered the tournament field of eight filled with confidence and thinking upset.
