Winter weather kept the polls stagnant this week but kept two teams from Marion County in the top five. Here’s this week’s breakdown:
LOOKING BACK: Only three teams in the top 10 played games this past week. Westside and Scott each played one of their three scheduled games while Sissonville was able to play two of its three games. All three teams picked up wins, though. Westside beat Independence quite easily, 96-21. Scott took down Poca in a tight one, 43-41. And Sissonville beat Poca, 60-26, and Class A No. 5 Wheeling Central, 64-53.
MOVING UP/ FALLING DOWN: Four teams moved in this week’s poll. While the top five remain intact, six through nine have some shake-ups. After winning two games, Sissonville improved their record to 9-2 and moved up from seventh to sixth, jumping Scott, which fell to seventh. In a weird turn of events, Clay County jumped PikeView for eighth place, putting PikeView down to ninth.
STAYING THE SAME: Only one team played in the top five, with that being the number one team. That keeps the top five the same as last week with it going Westside, Fairmont Senior, Summers County, North Marion and Lincoln. Westside (9-0) and Summers County (11-0) are both undefeated while Fairmont Senior (11-1) and Lincoln (9-1) have one loss and North Marion (11-2) have two losses on the year.
BIG 10 DOMINANT: Of the top five teams, three come from the Big 10 Conference. Between Fairmont Senior, North Marion and Lincoln, the three teams have a combined 31-4 record. The Lady Polar Bears and the Cougars were supposed to square off last week but never got the chance due to snow.
BIG MATCHUPS: No. 1 Westside has a tough road ahead, beginning Thursday night when it takes on Class AAA No. 1 Parkersburg South followed by No. 3 Summers County the very next day, which is followed by the Big Atlantic Classic on Saturday. No. 5 Lincoln will play Class AAA Preston, which sits just outside the top ten on Thursday night, presenting the Cougars with the possibility of a difficult task. No. 6 Sissonville will square off with No. 7 Scott on Saturday afternoon. No. 9 PikeView will look to stay in the top 10 when it plays Wyoming East, which sits just outside the rankings, receiving five votes this week.
