The rain was relentless.
It seemed like the entire week was one big storm cloud, trickling raindrops that soaked the cross country course at North Marion.
As sophomore Alex Myers ran through puddles at the Big 10 cross country championships, the rain intensified.
But Myers kept moving, kept fighting. He knew if he could just keep pace with the middle of the pack and finish in the top 10, he would earn all-conference honors.
After about three miles of trudging through the sloppy course, Myers ascended a hill near the end of the race. At the top, runners were falling down into the mud.
Myers leapfrogged around the competition and nimbly made his way down the decline where he came to a clearing. The finish line was in sight. Myers was in 10th.
But as he pumped his arms and chopped his feet along the muddy track, he began to fade.
“I pretty much had nothing left,” he said.
From behind, Fairmont Senior’s Matt Strand gained on Myers.
Soaking wet and covered in mud, Myers legs burned with lactic acid — the horrible feeling when a muscle is pushed to its limit. And failing.
The rain was relentless.
