FAIRMONT — The West Virginia Reign 12-U AAU basketball team is heading to nationals in Hampton, Va.

Throughout the season, the Reign has powered past its competition, while compiling a 36-3 record.

Though the team features a run-and-gun type of offense, coach Deon Dobbs knew he had a special team when the Reign took on annual powerhouse — the Xplosion.

The Xplosion is a team which currently is the top-dog in the state of West Virginia. However, they aren’t just the kings in West Virginia; they are also a nationally ranked team in the United States.

In April, it was time to defeat the Xplosion — to show them that Marion County youth basketball is king. The Reign had been smashing its competition, winning tournament after tournament.

So, it was time to lace it up and give it 100 percent against the best.

“A lot of tournaments that we went to, we were finishing first,” Dobbs said. “We played a few tournaments before our district qualifier in Charleston, which was in April. I knew we had a chance then to compete.

“When we played against the Xplosion last year in Charleston, they got us by 13 points. When we played them this year, they beat us by seven. We’re closing that gap against a team that’s nationally ranked.”
