FSU men hit road for Coal Classic

Lady Falcons look to snap losing skid

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State’s men’s basketball team looks to keep pace in the WVIAC today at 4 p.m. when the Falcons face Davis & Elkins at the King Coal Classic in Logan.

FSU, which has won 10 of its past 12 games, currently holds the second spot in conference play with a 10-2 mark.

In their most recent action, the Falcons picked up a 93-89 road victory over Shepherd last Saturday. After leading by 12 points at the half, FSU had to hold on for the win after a late surge by the Rams. On Monday, FSU pulled out a 78-66 victory over Glenville State. The Falcons limited GSC to 36 percent from the field and harassed the Pioneers into 17 turnovers in the victory.

Isaac Thornton has led the Falcons in scoring in each of the last six games and leads four FSU players averaging double figures at 16.9 per game. Brendan Cooper leads FSU with 7.6 rebounds per game.

Davis & Elkins (5-11, 4-8 WVIAC) is coming off a pair of league victories at Alderson-Broaddus and at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Ian Pinckney leads D&E with 18.5 points and 5.1 boards per game. Malik Tinsley averages 15.5 points and 5.6 boards.

On the women’s side, Fairmont State hopes to snap a three-game losing streak this afternoon when it hosts Davis & Elkins at 2 p.m.

The Falcons dropped a pair of conference matchups to Shepherd and Glenville State before falling to non-conference opponent Urbana on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday evening, Urbana used a 22-5 run to end the opening half to down the FSU, 64-61. Briana Welch led the Falcons with 16 points and seven boards in the loss; Hailey Garrett recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

In its last conference outing, FSU fell 85-84 to conference-leading Glenville State on Monday. GSC sealed the game with a layup with just seven seconds to play. Garrett (23) and Hailey Gunnoe (22) each recorded a career-high in points against the Pioneers.

Davis & Elkins (9-7, 8-4 WVIAC) won its fourth straight on Thursday over West Virginia Wesleyan.

Page Turner and Jorden Lykes are both averaging 13.4 points for the Senators. Lykes also leads D&E in rebounding, pulling down 7.7 per game.
