FAIRMONT — Fairmont State men’s basketball is set to toe the line against Wheeling Jesuit at home today beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Falcons carry a five-game winning streak into the WVIAC showdown.

But it isn’t just FSU who’s on a roll — Wheeling Jesuit has won six of its past eight games.

“They have our guys’ attention,” Fairmont State head coach Jerrod Calhoun said. “We were in a dog fight when we were there at Wheeling. Other than us and West Liberty, Wheeling Jesuit is the hottest team in our conference. They’ve won six out of eight games. They went on the road and beat a very good Charleston team at Charleston. They lost to West Liberty at home by five and didn’t shoot the three that well.

“So our guys won’t overlook Wheeling because they gave us such a good game the first time. They’re a very good team and they have a couple good seniors that are very good players.”

Not only are the Cardinals on a terror, but they are led by senior sensation Ben Siefert, who is averaging a near triple-double — 16 points per game, seven assists and seven rebounds.

“We have to key on Ben Siefert,” Calhoun said. “He’s kind of an engine that makes them go.”

Siefert is the primary culprit of Wheeling Jesuit’s three-point attack.

So far this season, the Cardinals have tallied 25 three-point shot attempts per game, knocking down nearly nine per game (8.1). That results in a 32 percent three-point average.
