Post 17 drops state championship in extras, 8-5

MORGANTOWN — The team poured out of the dugout, screaming and laughing as they converged on the pitcher’s mound after the West Virginia American Legion state championship game.

Parents, transformed into amateur paparazzi, scurried onto the diamond to capture the moment with their cameras and cellphones.

As the team posed — holding up index fingers to denote its place in the state tournament — John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” blared through the speakers, providing the soundtrack to the celebration.

For state champion South Charleston Post 94, the feeling was as close as it gets to “heaven” in its thrilling 13-inning victory.

While Fairmont Post 17 watched the celebration from the visitors’ dugout, the song also resonated, especially the first word — “almost.”

In a four-hour marathon game between two evenly matched opponents Sunday afternoon, Fairmont was close, but fell just short of the West Virginia state championship.
