In a way, Fairmont Senior’s wrestlers have been preparing for this season over the past two or three.
After all, the Polar Bears started eight freshmen at one point in 2010. Now, two years later, the bulk of that core is still in the fold and ready to take the next step as juniors.
The same applies to the Fairmont Senior wrestling program as a whole.
Though the Polar Bears had an 18th-place finish at states last year and return just one tournament placewinner in Anthony Alvaro, veteran head coach Mark Delligatti believes this is a team on the rise.
For one, FSHS has depth all over — “we’re filling almost every weight class with a kid that has wrestled for us for a while,” he said — and secondly, the move down to Class AA should provide a sizeable boost competitively.
