No. 18 WVU women look to extend streak at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 18 West Virginia University women’s basketball team looks to extend its three-game win streak at Texas at 4 p.m. today.

The Mountaineers (17-2 overall, 6-1 Big 12) are coming off a 70-51 win at Texas Tech on Wednesday. Senior center Asya Bussie led WVU with 19 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Christal Caldwell recorded her 1,000th-career point, while Taylor Palmer led the bench in scoring for the 16th time this season with 17 points.

The Longhorns are currently 12-6 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play, earning wins over Kansas State, Oklahoma and Kansas, while falling to Oklahoma State and West Virginia in overtime. Texas’ last outing was a 54-48 loss at TCU on Jan. 19.

As a team, the Longhorns are averaging 70.0 points per game, 45.1 rebounds per game and limiting opponents to only 55.5 points and 32.9 rebounds per game.

Nneka Enemkpali leads Texas in scoring with 13.2 points per game, while Imani McGee-Stafford adds 10.3 points per game. Chassidy Fussell sat out four games due to injury and returned to the court two games ago for a couple minutes against Kansas. She increased her time to 22 minutes in the last outing with TCU and averages 10.0 points per game in 14 games this season.

Enemkpali continues to lead the Longhorns on the boards with 8.4 rebounds per game, while McGee-Stafford adds 7.2 rebounds per game. McGee-Stafford leads UT in blocked shots with 32, while Kelsey Lang adds 21 blocks.

Against TCU, Texas had costly turnovers, with 26 giveaways, allowing the Horned Frogs 17 points off turnovers. McGee-Stafford and Sanders each had nine points to lead Texas, but shot only 30.4 percent (17-56) as a team. The Longhorns also sent TCU to the free-throw line more, allowing 14 points in 23 attempts.

WVU and Texas meet for the fifth time in program history. WVU leads 3-1 in the all-time series, dating back to March 17, 2012. Earlier this season, on Jan. 12, WVU defeated Texas 56-49 in overtime in Morgantown.

WVU shot its worst shooting percentage it has had all season, but used a 16-1 run over the final 3:30 of regulation and the overtime period to defeat the Longhorns.

Last season, WVU defeated Texas 53-49 in the initial game in Morgantown, but fell 58-45 in Austin.
