WHITE HALL —
Fairmont Senior’s “big time” golfer, Sterling Fitzwater, is getting amped and ready for the start of the 2013 high school golf season.
Last year, Fitzwater rose above his competition, while earning medalist (the best score of the event) 18 times as a junior. Not only did he excel during the regular season golf venue, he dominated in the playoffs.
Here, he not only drove for show, but he putted for dough. Being a versatile golfer allowed him and his talents to become recognized. This is when both he and his fellow teammates – Nick Sinclair, Gage Hannah, Bailey Mohr and Joel Garcia — made a quest for its first-ever Class AA all-state title.
Despite the Polar Bear’s finishing third as a team, Fitzwater was able to accumulate a score that labeled him as an all-state member. This is where he shot a 161, which earned him a sixth-place finish – the top eight finishers in each classification earn all-state honors.
He was also named as one of the select few golfers to represent the North squad in the North-South All-State tournament.
Fitzwater was only one of three juniors who were on tap for the event.
“I had a good junior season,” Fitzwater said. “It was an honor to play in the North-South All-Star game – It gave me experience and a taste of what it’s like to play with the best. I did achieve a lot of accomplishments, but I’m not satisfied. I want to win a state championship and also earn player of the year for the Top-Flight Tour this summer.”
