PLEASANT VALLEY —
One hit at a time.
That’s all Fairmont Legion Post 17 needed in its 8-6 win over Elkins Post 29 on Wednesday evening.
“We had to string along hits,” Fairmont Post 17’s first baseman Johnny Kesling stated. “We couldn’t give up. We had to chip away hits and eye the pitcher to see what he was throwing.”
The game was a nailbiter heading into the seventh inning. That’s when the game became intense.
Down 6-4, the rally needed to begin. It was a must.
Notre Dame’s Christopher Petrucci was the lead-off hitter. Hitting with patience, Petrucci took the count to 2-0. Knowing Elkins’ Brandon Hamons had to throw him a meatball, Petrucci sat back and drilled a heater down the middle.
This got Post 17 pumped.
Up next? All-State and All-Mon Valley Player of the Year Fletcher DeVaul.
“We needed to get runners on so we could get a rally,” Kesling said. “Fletch has been clutch for us all year, so I was confident when he was up.”
