Fluharty named All-Mon softball player of the year

FAIRMONT — “Move in! The girl is up,” the Little League boys taunted when Danielle Fluharty stepped to the plate.

Outfielders hurried in to the edge of the infield and the third baseman inched closer and closer to Fluharty, the only girl on her youth baseball team.

The pitcher wound and delivered. Fluharty took a big cut and cracked a line drive. It whistled down the third-base line and right into the mocking third-baseman’s throat, forcefully shutting him up.

“They had to stop the game because I hurt him,” said Fluharty, remembering the game nearly a decade ago. “After that it was, ‘The girl is up. You need to scoot back.’”

The boys learned not to underestimate Fluharty, and now it’s the Times West Virginian’s turn to show Fluharty some respect.

Fluharty, an All-Big 10 first-team pitcher and infielder at North Marion, has been selected as the 2013 Times West Virginian All-Mon softball player of the year.

Sometimes getting a bad game out of your system is what a team needs.
Post 17 Fairmont is hoping that they’ve now gotten all of its bad games out of the way, falling to Post 2 Morgantown, 10-0, via a 7th inning mercy rule, crowning Morgantown Area II American Legion champions.
After playing 18 innings the night before, Fairmont couldn’t seem to get anything going at East Fairmont High School Sunday afternoon.
As rain clouds loomed over the field, so, too, did one settle in over Post 17’s offense, Fairmont collecting just four hits the entire game.
“Definitely not one of our better games as a team,” Fairmont’s Austin Norman said of his team’s performance. “We’ll come up tomorrow, hit and get on the same page.”
