FAIRMONT — They’re No. 1.

Fairmont Senior’s baseball team is off to a flying 3-0 start to the season and on Monday was recognized for it, as the Polar Bears earned the top spot in the first Charleston Gazette state rankings.

FSHS, which has made the move down to Class AA after making the triple-A state tournament last season, is vying for its first state baseball championship in school history.

Aside from the Polar Bears, Huntington (Class AAA) and Charleston Catholic (A) are the No. 1 teams in their respective classes.

The rest of the Class AA field includes No. 2 Bridgeport, who hasn’t played a game yet, along with No. 3 Herbert Hoover, No. 4 Berkeley Springs and No. 5 Petersburg.

Fellow Big 10 foe Robert C. Byrd is sixth, while Poca, Independence, Sissonville and Ritchie County round out the top 10.
