Falcons sign 7-foot-1 Abele of Duquesne

FAIRMONT — Welcome to the most anticipated Fairmont State men’s basketball team since Joe Retton reigned.

Now, it’s Jerrod Calhoun’s chance to become the next “legendary” coach for the Fighting Falcons. Though Joe Retton Arena, inside the Feaster Center, will keep its distinguished name, Calhoun can make a change.

He can add Mountain East Conference banners to the rafters, along with a pursuit of a national championships. Putting Calhoun closer to his goals is the signing of former Duquesne center Martins Abele.

Abele isn’t just any type of recruit. Calhoun has brought in 6-foot-9 Mamadou Datt from Duquesne this season, and 6-foot-9 Isaiah Hill last year, but Abele is someone a bit different.
