Tonight, the Bees are buzzing after dark.
In advance of this year’s season, East Fairmont’s basketball programs will hold a Midnight Madness at the high school this evening.
The inaugural event will run from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the EFHS gym.
“We’re trying to do something exciting to kick off the season,” veteran East Fairmont boys coach Ty Asterino said.
And in this case, every East boys’ and girls’ hoops team — from freshman to junior varsity to varsity — plans to show a sneak peek of what’s to come in 2012-13.
Unlike some similar events where the varsity teams are the only ones showcased, the Bees will provide each team a 15-minute block tonight for introductions, drills and perhaps a scrimmage.
The Madness is just the latest in a trend for local teams.
East Fairmont’s wrestling team opened its season with a late-night practice session on Monday, and North Marion football has made Midnight Madness a before-the-season tradition in recent years.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Asterino said.
In addition to the basketball festivities, the East band and cheerleaders will also be in attendance.
Admission to tonight’s event is free and the first 100 children will receive free pizza, soda and T-shirt.
