A heavy thunderstorm that lasted for about two hours forced Fairmont Seniors’s football team to cancel its scrimmage against Grafton Wednesday night.
The scrimmage would have been the last live action the Polar Bears would have had seen before their season-opener against Robert C. Byrd next Friday.
J.L. Abbott, Fairmont Senior’s new head coach, said he was looking forward to playing Wednesday and getting his young players reps.
“We were going to let the ones go a series or two and then get our younger guys in and get them a lot of reps tonight,” he said. “But you can’t fight Mother Nature; she’ll win every time.”
Getting closer to their first game, Abbott said the younger players tend to not see as many reps in practice, and Wednesday would have bee a great chance for them to see live competition.
“With game one approaching as quickly as it is, sometimes our younger guys lose reps in practice,” he said. “So tonight we were going to make sure our younger guys got their reps.”
Once the scrimmage was called off, the Polar Bears didn’t have a day off; they went straight to the weight room.
