The soccer season is still in its infancy, so perhaps it was only fitting that young talent emerged for the Polar Bears Saturday afternoon.
Sophomores Tressa Bonasso and Avery Towns netted a goal each to power Fairmont Senior to a 2-0 victory over Pikeview in the team’s season-opener at East-West Stadium.
“We have a lot of tough underclassmen,” Fairmont Senior coach Ryann Moore said. “I knew last year when they came in as freshmen that they were ready to contribute to the team. And they’re really stepping up this year, pushing extra hard, staying after practice to run extra or take extra kicks. They’re ready to play. They’re hungry to fight for these wins.”
Last season, the Polar Bears defeated Pikeview in the state semi-finals. Moore knew that the Panthers would be back looking to get even. She told her team to be on their toes early.
“They were probably coming back for blood,” Bonasso said. “But we held our ground.”
The Polar Bears sure did. They held control of the ball in the Panthers’ zone for nearly the entire half, bombarding the team with shots.
