East Fairmont powers past North, Fairmont Senior

PLEASANT VALLEY — The East Fairmont High School softball team was rocking and rolling following its Class AA sectional sweep performance Monday against Fairmont Senior and North Marion.

The Bees leveled Fairmont Senior, 15-0, but the East-North matchup was a nailbiter.

It was North’s Danielle “D-Der” Fluharty versus East’s Ashley Martin, and the pitching performance was something special. Fluharty ignited the strikeout column, racking up 10, while Martin tallied three.

“D-Der threw a great game today,” North Marion High School head coach Brad Harker said. “Like I said all year long, she’s a competitor. I don’t think we played too bad defensively behind her, but we didn’t put the ball in play — 4-2? We have to do better than four runs.”

When the final out was called, East edged North, 4-2.

Although the pitching performance was near perfect, the offenses from both teams kept fans at the edges of their seats.

“We had a good showing today,” East Fairmont senior center fielder Jasmin Johnson said. “Whenever we all had big hits, the crowd got behind us and helped us carry our momentum.”

Anticipating a heater over the heart of the plate was East’s Mikayla Moore. She sat back and whacked the softball for a base hit.

Then it was Hannah Ferrell’s turn. Ferrell fought for a hitter’s pitch, and when she earned it, she drilled a double off the center field wall, scoring Moore.

East took an early 1-0 lead.
