Post 17 dominates in 10-4 win

PLEASANT VALLEY — Coach Marty Morgan gathered the Fairmont Post 17 Legion team just before the first pitch against Clarksburg Post 13 and asked for one thing.

“For two and a half hours, focus and give 100 percent,” he said, standing in front of the dugout at East Fairmont High School on a clear Friday evening.

A hundred fifty minutes, 9 innings, 15 hits and 10 runs later, coach Morgan must have been pleased.

After the sun set and the dust settled, Post 17 walked away with a dominant 10-4 victory over Clarksburg Post 13 that was never as close as the final score suggests.

Up and down the lineup, Fairmont hit the ball and hit it hard. Seven of the nine starters had multiple hits, including pitcher Fletcher DeVaul with three and first baseman Johnny Kesling with a double and a single.

Perhaps most impressively, only one starter was without a hit.

“We’re pretty deep,” shortstop said Chris Petrucci, who had two hits and a walk. “Everyone can hit and everyone can get on base. We don’t have any downfall in our lineup. We’re just steady.”

It wasn’t like Post 17 needed much with ace DeVaul on the mound. The righty struck out 10, allowed just four hits and one earned run in six innings of work.
