Fourth inning collapse costs Post 17, 10-4: PHOTOS

FAIRMONT — On Friday evening, Fairmont Post 17 could do no wrong.

Starting pitcher Fletcher DeVaul took a no-hitter into the fifth, the batters racked up 15 hits and Post 17 stormed to an easy, 10-4 victory.

Less than 24 hours later, Fairmont found itself on the other end of the coin, falling to the Jefferson Wildcats by the same score, 10-4, at Mary Lou Retton Park on Saturday.

“We just didn’t come into the game today with the right mindset, I don’t think,” assistant coach Kirk Atha said. “This team was a little bit better than what (Fairmont players) thought they were.”

Jefferson broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. After two singles to start the frame, nine-hole batter Dylan Macintosh bunted the runners into scoring position. Starting pitcher Bailey Mohr — who struggled with his command at times, walking two and hitting three — tossed back-to-back wild pitches to give Jefferson two runs.

After a single and a walk to the next two batters, his day was done. He allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out one in 3.1 innings.

“I lost control,” Mohr said. “My arm started to get tired. I didn’t have that much stamina. I only threw 70-something pitches and my arm felt dead.”
