Fairmont Senior’s girls’ lacrosse team had extra motivation when it defeated visiting Wheeling Park 20-3 Tuesday night.
The game was not only Senior Night but also to raise cancer awareness through fundraising and senior attack Ali Sansalone used the fundraiser as a motivator.
In the first half, Sansalone scored only one goal in helping the Polar Bears gain an 8-2 lead, but in the second half she added six more goals.
Sansalone said people were going to donate money to the fundraiser for every goal made by each team, and that gave her an extra boost.
“When we went out there for the second half, Sarah Topardo said, ‘Come on, guys; let’s score some,’ and that kind of hit me,” Sansalone said. “The first half I was out of it, and after I heard that I snapped into it.”
Sansalone said the game was special because it was senior night and because her team was playing with a purpose because of the fundraiser.
“We’re out here doing something we love, and it’s also beneficial for anybody who has had to go through that experience,” she said. “We did it for them.”
Fairmont Senior head coach Jonathan Cain said the team held a game like this last year that raised $1,500 and that the girls loved it. The only difference this year is that it brought awareness to all types of cancers, where last year was only breast cancer.
