After a quick first-round sectional win Monday, East Fairmont High School’s victory dance came to an abrupt end when Fairmont Senior High School pulled off a 5-2 win.
But the Polar Bears had to play catch-up for the first couple of innings.
East Fairmont began the game the way it ended against North Marion. The Bears strung along a few hits via singles from Travis Gordon, Easton Jimmie, Cutter Atha and then a clutch walk from Tanner Lambert that plated Gordon.
Although damage could have been done, the Polar Bears left the first inning unscathed — they only allowed one run with the bases juiced.
“Andrew Strand got out of that inning because he is a battler,” Fairmont Senior head coach Steve Naternicola said. “He likes the competition and he does a great job for us.”
FSHS was led by senior Fletcher DeVaul, who drilled a single and took second via steal and then third because of a wild pitch.
Keeping his team alive was Austin Norman. The left-handed hitter had one objective — to hit a deep fly ball, or to pull a ground ball so DeVaul could score.
