Strand wins mile at Run to Read races

FAIRMONT — After Matt Strand’s strong performance at states where he finished sixth in the 1,600, third in 4x400 relay and second in 4x800 relay, he vowed to not cut his hair until he had a bad race.

The barber will have to wait.

The Fairmont Senior standout took first place in the 1,600 at the Run to Read races at East-West Stadium Friday with a time of 4:43.5.

Zack Canaday of Bridgeport took second in the mile (4:59.9) and Michael A. Buonaiuto from Fairmont finished third at 5:01.3.

Erika Rucker paced the women with a time of 5:43.5, and 60-year-old Jean Cottrill earned second at 11:40.5.
