Field finalized for state track meet

FAIRMONT — The field has been finalized for the Class AA state track meet next week in Charleston.

In each event, the top three finishers from Thursday’s regionals automatically qualified. Friday morning, the next four best results from across the state were added, and several from Marion County were among those who received the nod.

From North Marion’s girls’ team, which placed first overall in the Region I meet at Ritchie County, Lauren Cyphers was added in the 100-meter hurdles.

She will join those who automatically qualified by way of top-three finishes, including Marlee Angelucci (100, 200), Alexis Hillberry (400), Taylor Trowbridge (1,600), Madison Haught (100 high hurdles), McKenzi Fisher (300-meter hurdles) and Skylah Haught (long jump, pole vault).

Multiple relay teams also finishing in the top three — the 4x100 (Fisher, Mariah Dent, Hillberry, Angelucci), 4x200 (Madison Haught, Fisher, Hillberry, Angelucci), 4x400 (Hillberry, Madison Haught, Lauren Freels and Trowbridge), 4x800 (Skylah Haught, Hannah Gordon, Freels and Trowbridge) and shuttle hurdles (Madison Haught, Lauren Cyphers, Gordon and Fisher).

On the boys’ side, John Merrifield was added in the 200.

The 4x110 shuttle hurdle team (Franklin Thomas, Andrew Moore, Justin Wheeler, John Merrifield) took third to automatically qualify.

From Fairmont Senior’s second-place team, Matt Strand was added based on his time in the 800, as were the 4x100 (Malik Boddy, Ben Stewart, Andrew Bundy and Chad Heldreth) and 4x400 (Andrew Bundy, Strand, Stewart and Heldreth) relays.

Those who already qualified automatically include Neil Scherich (110 high high hurdles, discus), Daquan Hilson (shot put), Andrew Summers (shot put), Dakota Mouser (high jump) and Logan Kish (discus).

The relay teams which automatically qualified are the 4x200 (Ben Stewart, Andrew Bundy, Chad Heldreth, Scherich) and the shuttle hurdles (Dakota Mouser, Chad Heldreth, Ben Stewart, Scherich).

On the girls’ side, Mia Manzo (100, 200) and Shania Riffle (high jump) finished in the top three to qualify Thursday.

 The 4x200 (Taylin Dobbs, Bethann White, Seneca Williams, Mia Manzo) and Emily Hershberger (high jump) were also added.

Finally for East Fairmont, the 4x400 team (Myles Johnson, Cameron Gibson, Barron Ford, Freddy Vincent) took third to earn their spot.

Based on their times, Johnson (400), Vincent (400, 300 hurdles), Ford (200), Cody Eckles (discus), Jacob Nuzum (high jump) and the 4x800 team (Ford, Vincent, Marcus Cole and Jacob Morris) will also earn the right to compete in Charleston.

On the girls’ side, Macey Nuzum (200) and the 4x100 team (Ashley Merrill, Anastasia Benedum, Kaitlyn Nuzum, Macey Nuzum) were added because of their time.
