Come state tournament time, style points don’t mean a whole lot when the only options are move on or head home.
And after Thursday afternoon’s Class AA quarterfinal at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum, that was a good thing for Fairmont Senior’s boys’ basketball team. The Polar Bears’ showing against scrappy No. 7 Scott wasn’t a thing of art, beauty or anything of the sort, but enough to survive another round with a gritty 55-48 win.
Fairmont Senior, the No. 2 seed and now 20-6 on the year, moves on to play Big 10 foe Bridgeport in the semifinals at 11:15 a.m. today. The sixth-seeded Indians, who dropped both regular-season games to the Polar Bears, upended No. 3 Westside 79-71 in an early morning quarterfinal matchup.
