For all the sparkling adjectives one could conjure up to describe Friday’s Class AA state boys’ semifinal between Fairmont Senior and Bridgeport, maybe the man who has been around the longest, Indians’ coach Gene Randolph, summed it up best.
“That was a good semifinal game,” he said. “That’s how it’s supposed to go.”
And that’s how it went at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum in this battle of Big 10 foes. No lead was ever safe, no stone was unturned to try to gain an edge, and by outlasting sixth-seeded Bridgeport for a tough 65-58 victory, no stopping the Polar Bears’ season-long quest for a state title.
Fairmont Senior, the No. 2 seed and 21-6 on the season, gets its championship chance at 2:30 p.m. today against top seed Bluefield.
