When given the choice of sectional on its tiny home floor or the spacious Woody Williams Armory, Fairmont Senior’s girls’ basketball team didn’t wait for the “Icebox” to freeze to decide.
The pick was a simple. On a team with its eye on big things — like a spot in the Class AA state tournament — bigger was certainly better.
“There’s tradition in this place. You know what I’m saying?” Fairmont Senior coach Corey Hines said. “Fairmont State’s great teams played here All the West Side team played here. The junior highs played here. For Fairmont, this is Madison Square Garden.”
On Wednesday, the Polar Bears didn’t let their chance to shine on a bigger stage go to waste. Fairmont Senior broke open a close game with a huge second half en route to a 63-44 victory over Weir in the Region I, Section 1 semifinal.
