Fairmont Senior not satisfied with week one win

FAIRMONT — There were very few things to dislike about the Polar Bears’ 28-7 win over Robert C. Byrd on Friday.

That doesn’t mean coach J.L. Abbott wasn’t thinking about them.

After a brief disclaimer that a win is a win and all that, Abbott was quick to point out the Polar Bears’ shortcomings.

“We’ve got some things we’ve got to work on,” he said.

Yes, the Polar Bears were impressive in many regards. Noah Harmon rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Malik Boddy returned one punt for a touchdown and was one tackle away from a second. And probably most impressively, Fairmont Senior held Robert C. Byrd under 100 yards rushing.

However, despite all this success, there were plenty of times the Polar Bears didn’t use their heads, or at least didn’t use them the right way, like when a punt in the second half hit off a Polar Bear blocker’s helmet and bounced to RCB for a turnover.

It was one of three turnovers on the day, the others being Austin Norman’s opening-drive interception and Harmon’s fumble late in the game. Those things are excusable to some degree and can even be expected this early in the season.

  • HERTZEL COLUMN: Lingering injury keeps Barber out as season begins

He was off on the sidelines on the first day of practice, where he’ll be for quite a while now, wearing the red jersey that signifies a player is unable to practice due to injury.
It wasn’t that he was standing around watching the proceedings. That’s not how it is with Jared Barber.
No, he’d jog up the sideline, then back.
