FAIRMONT — Two Marion County golfers are proving they can swing it with the best.

East Fairmont’s Brennon Vincent and North Marion’s Colton Holbert finished their first round of the West Virginia state golf tournament Tuesday at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.

After day one of two, Brennon is in 14th place after shotting an 87. Holbert, meanwhile, is one stroke back. He shot an 88 to finish tied for 19th.

Alston Spears from Roane County leads the state golfers with a 72.

While Holbert and Brennon said they are proud to be playing with the state’s top talent, neither was particularly pleased with his round.

“I just couldn’t get anything going,” Vincent said. “It was a long round.”

After starting the day with consecutive bogeys, Vincent shot par on the next two holes. On the back nine, he played bogey golf. His birdie was canceled out by his only double-bogey of the day.
