Fairmont All-Stars cruise, 9-1; 9-10 team advances to states

BRIDGEPORT — Saturday afternoon the sun beat down on the baseball field at Bridgeport Recreation Complex, pumping the thermometer into the 90s. Parents and fans retreated to the shade, but there was no escaping the heat the Fairmont All-Stars put on its opponent.

The 11- and 12-year-olds started fast and scored often to defeat Shinnston, 9-1.

Fairmont’s first five batters—Rhett Heston, Exavier Posey, Jaden Kuroski, Cody Wagner and Elijah Posey— each knocked singles to start the game and give the Stars the early 3-0 lead.

“It helps our pitchers to relax when we can get off to quick starts,” coach Billy Wilkerson said. “We have had a habit of doing that in the first inning, scoring 3, 4, 5 runs in the first inning. That helps our pitcher settle in.”
