This wasn’t the start Fairmont Senior’s boys’ basketball team expected.
The Polar Bears, coming off a state tournament appearance last season and predicted by some to do big things in 2012-13 with the move to Class AA, were humbled in their season debut Saturday night in 82-67 loss to University at Woody Williams Armory.
The Hawks, who led 16-15 after a period, never trailed or were even tied with the Polar Bears all evening.
University (2-0) outscored Fairmont Senior 20-14 in the second period to take a 40-31 lead into the half. The team stretched the lead to 60-45 by the end of three.
Tevin Dixon paced the Hawks with 21 points. Tim Dixon added 17 as the brother duo combined to hit seven of the team’s eight 3s.
Jarin Hilson had a career-best 30 points for the Polar Bears, including 16 in the fourth quarter. Travon Horton finished with 19.
