Huskies can’t keep up with MHS in 41-0 loss

RACHEL — North Marion coach Gerry White said he was proud of his football squad despite dropping to 0-7 after a 41-0 drubbing by Morgantown Friday at Husky Field.

White pointed out that the “young, inexperienced” Huskies continue to show improvement with every game. He added that North continued to play hard throughout the game despite being down 28-0 after the first half.

“And we came out the second half and controlled the ball,” White said. “I know it doesn’t look like it when you look at the score, but we’re improving.”

“We played a real good team tonight,” White said about the opposing squad, who racked up 376 total yards in the game.

Two hundred and seventy-four of those yards came on the ground with standout running back Jeff Allen leading the Mohigan charge with 106 rushing yards.

The Mohigan defense stifled the Huskies’ running attack, holding North Marion to a meager 30 yards rushing on 30 attempts. However, junior quarterback Cody Morgan put up some offensive numbers for the Huskies. Morgan completed 14 of his 28 passes for 162 yards and two interceptions.

“We tried to be well balanced,” White said about combining the run and the pass. “But they were just too big and physical for us in the box.”

Therefore, White and his coaching staff decided to run the offense from a shotgun formation in the second half. White added that the Huskies’ offensive line protected Morgan much better in the second half, giving him the time to read the defense and complete passes.

Morgan said he noticed that the Morgantown linebackers seemed to be keying on fullback Anthony DeMary. Therefore, he was able to complete some passes over the middle and in the flats.

“Their secondary was pretty good,” Morgan said. “But when you see some openings you have to take them.”

MHS coach John Bowers complimented the Huskies on playing hard. He pointed out that he was happy to take a win away from what he called an extremely “physical” game.

“They’re the best 0-7 team I’ve ever seen,” Bowers said. “They’re real hitters.”

The Huskies have this coming weekend off. Then they will host the Nicholas County Grizzlies in a non-conference matchup.

Morgan said that although he was looking forward to getting a weekend off so he along with his teammates can regroup, he noted that he thought the Huskies were really coming together as a team.

White said his squad will continue to work on fundamentals in hopes of getting that first win of the season.

“We have three games left,” White said. “I feel that we can go in and really compete and have a chance to win.”
