FAIRMONT — After a week of wins and one crucial loss, there is a new top dog in the Associated Press boys’ basketball poll.

Here’s the breakdown:

LOOKING BACK: Top-ranked Bluefield lost its first game of the season, 67-52, to Greenbrier East this past week. From there, only two other teams lost a game with Bridgeport losing to Robert C. Byrd and Scott losing to Poca. Only Bluefield’s loss came to a team not ranked in the top 10 of AA. Going down the list, Westside picked up a win, RCB picked up three wins, Wyoming East won twice, Bridgeport won two of three, Fairmont Senior beat Buckhannon-Upshur and Liberty (Raleigh) beat Independence. All of Chapmanville’s games were postponed for last week. With Bluefield’s loss, only RCB and Wyoming East remained undefeated in last week’s top 10.

BIG 10 BEATING UP ON EACH OTHER: All three of Robert C. Byrd’s wins came against Big 10 opponents, with wins coming against Lincoln, Lewis County and Bridgeport. Both of Bridgeport’s wins came against conference foes as the Indians beat Philip Barbour and North Marion. Fairmont Senior’s lone win of the week came against Buckhannon-Upshur as the Polar Bears won, 56-35.

FLYING HIGH: Robert C. Byrd jumped from third to first in this week’s poll. The Flying Eagles moved to the top spot after picking up three wins coupled with Bluefield’s loss to Greenbrier East.

NEWCOMER: Roane County moves into the top 10 this week, tying Scott for the final spot of the poll. Roane is 6-2 on the season.

MOVING UP/FALLING DOWN: As mentioned, RCB moved up from third to first but they weren’t the only teams to make moves this week. Wyoming East, which was fourth in last week’s poll, jumped up to second, jumping Westside. Westside, instead, falls to fourth despite winning their only game of the week. Poca, which was sixth last week, moves into a tie for fifth with Chapmanville, which didn’t play last week. Fairmont Senior moved up one spot from ninth to eighth after Scott’s loss dropped the team to 10th. Bridgeport remains seventh and Liberty Raleigh moved up to eighth.

BIG MATCHUPS: No. 1 Robert C. Byrd will start the defense of their newly acclaimed top spot when they take on No. 8 Fairmont Senior on the road Wednesday night. The marquee match of the week, though, is No. 2 Wyoming East battles No. 3 Bluefield tonight. No. 5 Poca will play No. 10 Scott on Friday.
