Postlewait, Johnson earn first-team Big 10 honors

FAIRMONT — In a volleyball season that saw its fair share of excitement, players can now take away their individual awards.

For Marion County, East Fairmont’s Tori Postlewait and Fairmont Senior’s Jasmine Johnson each tallied first-team All-Big 10 selections, announced earlier this month.

Postlewait, a senior setter for the Bees, provided leadership as well as consistency all season.

“She was definitely a leader on and off the floor,” East Fairmont coach Deb Spears said of her team’s only senior. “She was our leader in assists as our setter. She was one of our top servers, and she can hit very well. She didn’t get a chance to hit as much because we used her as a setter, but she’s just very versatile. That’s hard to find.”

The 5-foot-7 senior averaged 10 assists and five kills per match for her last high school volleyball season before falling short in the sectional tournament.

“She hustled the most out of anyone that I had on the floor,” Spears said. “A lot of the success we had this year was because of her.”

Being the lone senior on the squad, Spears believes that her individual success will carry over in the younger players on the team for the coming years.

“We were a very young team. For our youth I don’t think we did a bad job,” said Spears. “(The team) just saw the drive that she had, and they know that they’re going to have to get a lot more of that to be successful. If we all get that drive, we can go a lot further than we have.”

Postlewait also went on to play in the North-South volleyball game earlier this month.

Johnson, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, helped lead Fairmont Senior to its most successful season in a decade.

“Jasmine is a sophomore setter that helped lead the Lady Bears to a 7-5 conference record, which is the best the team has had in over a decade, and an overall 16-19 record,” Fairmont Senior assistant coach Melisa Jura said of the sophomore.

“She is extremely consistent and literally does it all. Jazz is one of those players that coach (David) Price and I never have to worry about on the court. She brings 110 percent every single day.”

She recorded 230 assists, 171 digs, 87 aces, 78 kills and eight blocks during a season that saw the Polar Bears make it to the regional tournament. She was also the team’s best server, serving with a 94 percent accuracy on the season.

“Regardless of the opponent we are facing, or even if it is just practice, we can always count on her to lead by example on the court,” Jura said. “She sets, hits, blocks, plays defense, and has one of the most consistent serves I have ever seen.

“She is one of the most focused and hardworking young ladies I have had the privilege of coaching. Her mind is always on the game, and she can shake off her (rare) mistakes better than most I’ve seen. Coach Price and I are so proud that her hard work has been recognized and are extremely thankful that she will still be around for another two years.”

Joining them on the first team are Philip Barbour's Nikki Shriver, Mariah Davis and Hannah Stewart. Shriver was selected as the Big 10 player of the year after leading the Colts to their first 50-win season in the team’s history. Shriver tallied 512 kills, 238 blocks, 37 aces and 21 assists to go along with over 400 digs on the year.

Rounding out the first-team selections are Denise Adkins (RCB), Quin Sanders (RCB), Karly Cooper (RCB), Leah Blend (BU), Mackenzie Leigh (BU), Kyley Pierce (Bridgeport), Sydney Leatherman (Bridgeport) and Jose Payton (Lincoln).

From Marion County on the second team are Sydney Postlewait and Gabrielle Yerace of East Fairmont, Kaden Whaley of Fairmont Senior and Noca Singleton of North Marion.

Others on the second team include Philip Barbour’s Haley Stewart, RCB’s Daisy Eklund, Bridgeport’s Emily Griffith, B-U’s Sarah Ling, Lincoln’s Jenna Correll, Elkins’ Kayla Simmons, Lewis County’s Micah Ford, Liberty’s Kaylee Ritter and Grafton’s Brittany Marcavage.
